RARE 1796 ENGRAVED MEZZOTINT – 2ND GOLF PRINT EVER PUBLISHED. SUBJECT IS JAMES BALFOUR, ESQ. PAINTED BY RAEBURN

$800.00

Description

Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) was a distinguished member of the Royal Academy and was one of the premier portrait artists of his time. This is an original print of an engraving of James Balfour, Esq. who held a position as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Edinburgh Company of Golfers. This is the second ever published engraving, a mezzotint after an oil painting. The books on his table are titled “Record of Gentlemen Golfers” and “Bet Book.” Historical references mention that the number of copies published was less than 50. The original early golf prints were originally printed in black and white. During the period in which the early golf art was produced, golf was considered to be a sport for the aristocracy. This is an incredible find and will be a rare addition to any golf collector. Size 17″ x 23.”
